We're In The Game
Challenge
Northwestern Magazine developed a multimedia feature highlighting alumni working in the video game industry and the creative and technical innovation behind game development.
Role
Art Director and Lead Designer responsible for the visual concept and design across print, digital, and social media.
Approach
Conceptualized an immersive visual theme and collaborated with freelance illustrator and animator Whitney Lam to create illustrated alumni portraits and animations. Designed layouts, created animated icons and player cards, and produced supporting assets including Instagram stories and video content for social media and digital platforms.
Impact
The social media campaign reached over 343,000 people and helped make “We’re In The Game” one of the top three Northwestern Magazine stories of 2022. The digital story also headlined the October newsletter and was featured on Northwestern’s homepage for several days.

Digital Site
Animated and Interactive Player Cards: Working with illustrator and animator, Whitney Lam, we portrayed Northwestern alumni who work in the gaming industry as video game players and showcased them in “player cards.” They were lightly animated to have a looping card animation on the digital site. On the digital site, a custom interactive element was added to the cards so they flipped when hovering ovver the cards. These animated cards were also used in video and social media. These cards were a special element that complimented the story’s content.
Illustrated and Animated Icons: These icons were drawn and created for a sidebar that highlighted the different categories in gaming. They used the same colors and similar style of the illustrations by Whitney Lam. They were animated in digital.
