Interactive Storytelling

Challenge
Northwestern Magazine is a print-first publication, and its stories often need to be reimagined for digital audiences in ways that encourage exploration, interaction, and visual storytelling.

Role
Lead designer responsible for developing interactive storytelling experiences across multiple digital features, collaborating with a developer to ensure the work functioned seamlessly across devices and browsers.

Approach
Designed and implemented interactive elements including animated story graphics, parallax scrolling experiences, a 360 image viewer, and other dynamic media features. Combined illustration, motion graphics, and lightweight front-end code while working with a developer to refine performance, responsiveness, and usability.

Impact
These interactive elements helped transform traditional articles into immersive multimedia experiences that increased engagement and made complex stories more accessible and visually compelling.

Stretching the Imagination

Pioneering professor John Rogers founded a new field of bioelectronics to improve human health. I took the style and assests from the print magazine and created graphics for the videos, created an Instagram story, and animated and edited a digital infograph that highlights some of the inventions that John Rogers has created. View the digital story here.

The Rhythm of Sleep

I created an Instagram Reels on “Improving Sleep,” to promote this story. I used the animated the illustrations from Yifan Wu. View the digital story here.

Your Cleaning Habits Could Make You Sick

Scientist warn of disinfectant overuse. The COVID-19 pandemic boosted the unnecessary use of these products, many of which are linked to health problems, antimicrobial resistance and environmental harm. This story was a Discovery brief ran in Northwestern Magazine. A video was created for the digital site and with limited graphic assets, I was asked to create an animated section for the video. For this video, I worked with a hand animation style, and used cell-animation for the bottle flipping to the back of the ingredients.
